«I started Reddit to help people find community and a sense of belonging. It’s high time to do the right thing. I do this for myself, my family and my country,» Ohanian wrote on Twitter. He added that he does this in part so that in the future it would not be a shame to answer the question of his dark-skinned daughter «what did you do?».
The Reddit co-founder also donated $1 million to the «Know your rights» legal education campaign for young people. Ohanian made these decisions against the backdrop of mass protests related to the murder of African-American George Floyd.
«I use my future earnings from Reddit shares to serve the black community — mainly to fight racial animosity,» Ohanian explained.
Earlier, Reddit started to close some popular Subforums and block publications critical of the company’s policy on hate speech, writes the Verge. Moderators accused Ohanian and CEO Steve Huffman of failing to take action against racism on the site and in individual communities.
